Did you know, Labour Day used to be celebrated in the spring and was moved to the fall in 1895. Canada also inspired Labour Day events in many other countries including the United States.
Are you getting ready to go away this long weekend or getting ready to head back to school? Are you prepared if something should happen while you are driving?
Many people are not, because they never think it will happen to them. I decided to write about roadside assistance because this is something that many of us don’t think we really need and then “bam” we’re broken down on the side of the road wishing we had it.
This happened to a friend of mine recently, when she and her three children recently went to the city to visit some friends and, all of sudden, her car started chugging badly. She called her husband but couldn’t get in touch with him so she called me instead. I asked her what her temperature gauge was showing and she indicated she had no idea. (She didn’t even know she had one.) Once she found it, the needle was fully in the red. Not a good sign. I asked her if she had roadside assistance and she told me they had decided not to renew it due to tight finances. In the end, she was able to renew it and was able to get rescued -- but what a pain in the neck and a stressful situation.
Imagine having three kids, stuck on the side of the road, and it’s night time.
As a woman, this is something I would be very stressed about. I personally have had CAA (Canadian Automobile Association) for the past nine years, as all of my vehicles have run out of their factory roadside assistance program. Since I live in the country I decided to get the CAA Plus, it allows you to have your vehicle towed 200km, four times a year and it’s good for any vehicle you are in. So if you’re with a friend and they break down, as long as you are with them, you can use your card and it’s also great if you happen to lock your vehicle with the keys in it.
I’ve used my card a number of times to rescue my boyfriend who thinks roadside assistance is a waste of time. He always tells me why should he buy it when he has me…this has been a great investment and a great peace of mind for me.
If you're a student going away for school, I would recommend CAA Plus, rather than the base card, because the base package only gives you a tow of 10kms. Maybe your parents can buy you this as your birthday or Christmas gift?
