image from www.soundtrap.comSpotify has acquired online recording studio startup Soundtrap. Few details of the acquisition were shared, but Soundtrap, founded in 2012, has raised $8.5 million, including a $6 million Series A last year.

For now at least, Soundtrap will continue to offer its an online collaborative music recording studio platform that enables users to record, edit and share recordings.  Soundtrap has become particularly popular at schools, for music teaching and for creating podcasts.

The Stockholm-based team, led by founders Per Emanuelsson, Björn Melinder, Gabriel Sjöberg and Fredrik Posse will join a team at Spotify that is "dedicated to helping millions of artists connect with millions of fans, and helping fans discover their favorite new artists."

It's unclear exactly how, or even if, Soundtrap will be integrated with Spotify. But it's not hard to imagine that audio created using the online studio - including music and podcasts - could be uploaded directly to Spotify, thus bypassing traditional labels, distributors and aggregators.
