Sony's 'Dark Tower' Limps To The Top Of The Weekend Box Office

Sony and MRC’s "The Dark Tower" had the dubious distinction of topping U.S. box office on a weekend that proved fairly dismal for the studios. "Dark Tower" an adaption of of a series of fantasy books by horror author Stephen King, limped in at the top with just $18 million at 3,449 locations for the Friday-Sunday period, according to figures compiled by comScore. 

Even though it was on its debut, "Dark Tower" which stars Idris Elba as the Gunslinger and Matthew McConaughey as the villainous Man in Black, barely managed to eek out Chris Nolan's World War II epic "Dunkirk," which brought in $14.4 million for the weekend and crossed the $300 million mark for cumulative revenue. 

"The Emoji Movie" clung to third place over the weekend, adding an additional $12 million domestically. Internationally, the China-originated "Wolf Warrior 2" continued to do big box office, adding $163.5M across six different territories and nearing the half a billion mark.
