Joe Corré, son of the Malcolm McClaren, the former manager of UK punk band The Sex Pistols, declared the medium dead on Saturday and commemorated the occasion by burning at least £5m / $6.2 million USD worth of rare punk memorabilia.
Items consigned to the conflagration, which took place on a barge in the Thames River, included rare Sex Pistols recordings, clothing belonging to Johnny Rotten and Corré’s mother, Vivienne Westwood, and a Sid Vicious doll embossed with a swastika, the Guardian reported.
“I think this is the right opportunity to say:
you know what? Punk is dead."
Corré said: “I think this is the right opportunity to say: you know what? Punk is dead. Stop conning a younger generation that it somehow has any currency to deal with the issues that they face or has any currency to create the way out of the issues that they face. It’s not and it’s time to think about something else.”
Corré, who sold his own memorabilia collection in 1994 and used the receipts to launch a lingerie company that he later sold the lion's share of to a private equity company for a reported 60 million, also announced he is making a bid for London's mayor, running on a libertarian platform.
